| Why we live here!
Why Durango and La Plata County? I regularly get calls from people considering relocation or investment and looking at various locales. Visitors considering Durango often look from Montana and Idaho to New Mexico and Arizona and many other areas in Colorado.
Of course I am biased, but I can’t think of a better place to live and a recent Colorado College study confirms my thoughts. Out of 138 Rocky Mountain Counties, our county, La Plata County, was ranked "most livable", based on factors including business and employment growth, education, poverty, earnings and income and amenities.
There are several factors that distinguish the Durango area. First and foremost, it is a “real town” of about 15,000--50,000 in the county—full time residents Our economy is diverse and we enjoy a vibrant, active and incredibly picturesque mountain environment.
Fort Lewis College with 4,400 students and the Division Two National Championship soccer team brings youthful vitality to the community. Our local school systems, Durango Schools and Bayfield Schools, are excellent. The Durango Rec Center is a wonderful community resource. This is a great place to live and raise a family.
As one of Outside Magazine's best “outside” towns, we are ranked their best mountain bike town. We have excellent medical facilities and daily air service to Denver, Phoenix and Salt Lake City and seasonal service to Dallas. The sunny and dry climate is beautiful—not too hot in the summer—not too cold in the winter. Travel half an hour north and you are in the highest mountains in the country, half an hour south and you are entering the desert southwest . Whether you are walking through wildflowers, fishing or hunting or cross country skiing, the San Juan National Forest is a 2.5 million acre paradise. There is great skiing at Durango Mountain Resort and the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Mesa Verde National Park are national treasures.
And the town itself is fun and vibrant with interesting shops and lots to see and do. I’m told we have more restaurants per capita than San Francisco and the town is alive with music, art and theater.
With all of these assets, locals are probably proudest of the casual lifestyle that resulted in our selection as the "worst dressed town in America" by USA Today. Durango and vicinity is a great place to live. Our real estate market is strong and there is much value here. Let me know how I can help. Write or call anytime.
